For an unpopular politician, Ranil Wickramasinghe must be the longest serving opposition leader.

Ranil Wickramasinghe. picture credit: AP

There are so many negative things that can be said about Wickramasinghe. He doesn’t understand the common man, his ideology is directly borrowed from west and he tries to cut Sri Lanka to fit his ideology, his cronies are a set of Colombo elite and he doesn’t listen to party grassroots instead thinks that everyone must accept his theory. He held important offices in several violent and corrupt governments, and did not raise a voice.

And he is an appeaser of the worst kind. His “peace process” with the LTTE terrorists was mainly focused on discussing the logistics to provide what the terrorists want, and telling the south that how recently converted LTTE is from violence to “peace”, and how the south should bear any terrorist act until the tiger is properly domesticated.

The aftermath of the Presidential Election showed some of the funniest claims by the people.

Disclaimer: I DO NOT endorse the unprofessional and biased way the state media was used by the government. It WAS Biased, and it WAS ugly. However, I don’t think that it made a big difference on the whole outcome. People who had voted SF won’t change just because Idi Amin was shown in the TV,  showing Idi Amin was nevertheless stupid, biased, useless, ugly and lame. Shame on you, Rupavahini, ITN, SLBC, and the spineless morons that control them.

In the English I know, democracy means people electing their representatives to govern them. Such an exercise was just finished in SL; people voted for a president, and there was a rather high voter turn out that was even commended by the Unites States, elections were largely peaceful, and Mahinda Rajapakse was re-elected with a clear majority that would rule out any winning due to malpractices and vote rigging. That is, at least for a realistic observer who hopes that ideally there should not be any malpractices, but not suffering from amnesiato think that this isn’t the only election conducted in Sri Lanka with more than zero malpractices. This writer accepts that there have been malpractices, but this isn’t the first time that there were any in Sri Lanka. Taboo Subjects’ this lament makes one wonder if there really are people who are born yesterday.

no need to explain.

At 2005 Prez election, Ranil could get more votes than Sarath Fonseka managed to garner, in almost all electorates where SF was expected to be stronger, including JVP-(allegedly)-dominated Tissamaharama (all while having JVP supporting the opposing candidate) and, alas, Fonseka’s own hometown Ambalangoda and neighboring Balapitiya.

I figure there’s a smirk on Ranil’s face right now.

Showing the hypocrisy yet again, W3 Lanka has forgotten that Sarath Fonseka promised a 10,000 Rupee salary hike to the government servants, while Mahinda Rajapakse promised only 2,500.

Now in a post that indirectly insults government servants, W3 Lanka alleges that the clear majority in postal votes for Mahinda Rajapakse is due to this promise.

Clearly, the promise of salary increase given to the “නිකම් සිට හෝ අඩුවෙන් වැඩ කර හෝ පඩි ගන්නා” government servants by Sarath Fonseka was four times larger than that given by Rajapakse. Yet W3 Lanka fails even to mention in the biased analysis why the government servants did not bite Sarath Fonseka’s 10,000 bait, which was given equal or better publicity than MR’s. While technically true, this blatant omission and the follow-up insults clearly shows the hypocrisy of W3 Lanka, because the whole reason for MR to make that promise was the even bigger and unrealistic promise by SF.

A comment in Voice in Colombo pointed out a lot of nice things about the favourite president (NOT) of us all, Chandrika Kumaratunga. I thought of setting the record straight and wrote a reply, but posting failed for several times, so I thought (and considering the interest of the subject) I’ll post my full reply here.

>>> CBK had Ranil as the opponent. Mahinda is having Fonseka.

Fonseka’s only claim is that he won the war. Anyone with a grain of brain knows that it’s the political leadership that should get major credit/blame for finishing the war facing all domestic/foreign pressure and managing the political stability. SF is now allied with a group of people some of which ridiculed war and some who were openly in the side of the LTTE. And some who “did not take side” thinking bargaining between “Sinhalese” GoSL and “tamil” LTTE will leave them with a bigger piece of benefits. (There are similar people with MR, but they have at least for record denounced their old ways. TNA doesn’t STILL admit that LTTE was a bloody terrorist group and it was wrong to support them. UNP doesn’t still admit that it was wrong to insult SF as being unsuitable for Salvasion army or famous kilinochchi/medavacchi talk. Mangala doesn’t still admit that it was wrong to use “Arakshaka Vimasuma”counter propaganda to war) It is not about who SF WAS. It’s about who SF represents today.

>>> CBK was at war at the time of election and tigers had an attempt at her life.

CBK went to war when everything fucked up and even then, used Mangala to break the courage of the forces through anti-war campaigns. She also sacrificed soldiers lives for useless political shows. She used war as excuse for fucking up the economy all the while hoarding money with corrupt deals.

Bravo Ranil. This time, you were more honest than the average UNPer and closet UNPers who don Wickramabahu etc skins.

Or were you? There are only three possibilities. Ranil is:

  • either undermining Fonseka campaign (as we expected), because he’s only second to Mahinda Rajapaksa in not wanting to see Fonseka wins.
  • or thinking that he can have double talk and say whatever in front of Tamils, thinking it won’t be reported back to SL. His earlier interview with PTI was similar. And this is the guy who went to north and called Mahinda “poda” and described him as a “hero of Sinhalese”.
  • The whole SF camp thinks that they can have double talk to cheat both Tamils and Sinhalese.

In an interview to Global Tamil Vision, UNP Leader Ranil Wickramasinghe claimed that “once the government gave the order, the service commanders have to go ahead and execute it”.
