So Sarath Fonseka is arrested.

Those who went on all sorts of apologia for the Fonseka-Mangala-JVP-TNA-UNP-SLMC dirty election alliance are now crying about the loss of democrasy.

This author doesn’t think that government was very reasonable or tactical in arresting Sarath Fonseka. Fonseka was a loser, and a political tar baby with UNP (quite rightly) washing their hands off the alliance and showed signs of going back to basics. Which was a good thing. Those who were left with Fonseka were JVP/Mangala/Tiran Alles and the likes, who wanted MR out just because they hated him and just because they had no future with him. Those had no political acceptance, let alone popularity. With Fonseka’s repeated demonstrations of what kind of a ‘politician’ he is, it would have been a matter of time that the ‘rest of the alliance’ ends up in embarrasment.

Denial is a defense mechanism postulated by Sigmund Freud, in which a person is faced with a fact that is too uncomfortable to accept and rejects it instead, insisting that it is not true despite what may be overwhelming evidence.

In the English I know, democracy means people electing their representatives to govern them. Such an exercise was just finished in SL; people voted for a president, and there was a rather high voter turn out that was even commended by the Unites States, elections were largely peaceful, and Mahinda Rajapakse was re-elected with a clear majority that would rule out any winning due to malpractices and vote rigging. That is, at least for a realistic observer who hopes that ideally there should not be any malpractices, but not suffering from amnesiato think that this isn’t the only election conducted in Sri Lanka with more than zero malpractices. This writer accepts that there have been malpractices, but this isn’t the first time that there were any in Sri Lanka. Taboo Subjects’ this lament makes one wonder if there really are people who are born yesterday.

A comment in Voice in Colombo pointed out a lot of nice things about the favourite president (NOT) of us all, Chandrika Kumaratunga. I thought of setting the record straight and wrote a reply, but posting failed for several times, so I thought (and considering the interest of the subject) I’ll post my full reply here.

>>> CBK had Ranil as the opponent. Mahinda is having Fonseka.

Fonseka’s only claim is that he won the war. Anyone with a grain of brain knows that it’s the political leadership that should get major credit/blame for finishing the war facing all domestic/foreign pressure and managing the political stability. SF is now allied with a group of people some of which ridiculed war and some who were openly in the side of the LTTE. And some who “did not take side” thinking bargaining between “Sinhalese” GoSL and “tamil” LTTE will leave them with a bigger piece of benefits. (There are similar people with MR, but they have at least for record denounced their old ways. TNA doesn’t STILL admit that LTTE was a bloody terrorist group and it was wrong to support them. UNP doesn’t still admit that it was wrong to insult SF as being unsuitable for Salvasion army or famous kilinochchi/medavacchi talk. Mangala doesn’t still admit that it was wrong to use “Arakshaka Vimasuma”counter propaganda to war) It is not about who SF WAS. It’s about who SF represents today.

>>> CBK was at war at the time of election and tigers had an attempt at her life.

CBK went to war when everything fucked up and even then, used Mangala to break the courage of the forces through anti-war campaigns. She also sacrificed soldiers lives for useless political shows. She used war as excuse for fucking up the economy all the while hoarding money with corrupt deals.

It is fairly well known that most of JVP and especially their stooge IUSF campaigns plan for violence from government, because it is positive sympathy propaganda for them. If there wasn’t a police attack, the campaign ends up lackluster. Only this fact could explain why the IUSF campaigns usually target breaking into high security zones etc, when delivering a letter doesn’t mean 1000 students going to meet the president. The 2007 strike of the JVP failed when there was not much government violence but orchestrated media campaigns (with the support of private media pandering to people’s aversion to strike related inconveniences), so they had to call off the touted full-time strike fearing public political fallout.

It seems that the so called posh media establishments are no better: As it seems, the major contingency plan of The Sunday Leader when they published the controversial interview of Sarath Fonseka has been to assume that the government would unleash violence upon them!

But they were wrong. Very, very wrong.

It’s no secret that posts in this blog are critical of Sarath Fonseka+Mangala+JVP+UNP alliance, in the order of current campaign energy.

Am I strictly against General Fonseka? Am I a strict Mahinda “Fan”?

no and no.

But there are times when people have to take a side. I personally think that there are also times that people should get down from their pseudo-intellectual high horses and take a political stand. I think this is such a time. And I took a stand, which is to support the continuation of Rajapakse rule. This doesn’t mean that I approve of everything Rajapakse does, or that I do it on personal basis of who the ruler is.

Why I support Rajapakse is, while a crook, he still seems to me as the safest bet.
